October

I have 10 days to sum up the rest of 2014 before I recommit to regularly blogging in 2015, so here it goes.

 

 

We enjoyed the warm temperatures of October and even conned Charlie into pulling the wagon during some of our many trips to the neighborhood park.   

 

 

 

The Hulk helped us celebrate Halloween,

as did our little donut.  Lucy's costume was perfect that night because it was warm and when she fell (2-3 times) it was like she landed on a pillow.  We'd yell "donut down" and quickly put her back on her feet. 

I tried to convince Charlie that it would be really funny if he dressed up like a glass of milk but he didn't take the bait. Maybe next year I'll succeed in my goal of having the entire family dressed up as a coordinated theme. BJ will be thrilled.

 

We tried on our hats and wore them around, inside the house until we were sweaty and our hair was crazy.

We enjoyed 3 trips in 4 days to the pumpkin patch.  I was able to chaperone both Charlie and Lucy's class trips and then we went as a family that weekend.  I'm all pumpkin patched out until next October.

October was fun, but November was even better.

September



September was pretty low-key, but we soaked in some end-of-summer fun by going to Adventureland for the day.  Confession, I purchased discounted tickets through work back in May and when I finally found them in my  "junk" drawer, I realized that there was one weekend before Adventureland closed for the season.  The bummer was that BJ was out of town, but I'll remember that next year and let him take the kids by himself :). 

 

It turns out that September was an awesome time to go to the amusement park.  There weren't any crowds, and except for a little rain shower, the day was close to perfect.

Waiting out the rain while Charlie searched for the hidden treasure on the Adventureland map - we never found the actual treasure, but I found a Diet Coke for me and ice cream for the kids, so pretty much our version of a treasure.

Charlie was a pretty good big brother to ride some of the "baby" rides with Lucy.  In turn, Lucy was pretty patient while Charlie rode a few rides that she wasn't able to...admittedly, I'm not sure that she will ever be tall enough to ride most rides because she is so short.

It's no secret that I'm technologically-challenged.  While waiting on the giant ferris wheel to start, I learned how to take a selfie.  I never knew that you were able to "reverse" the view from your cell phone.  All this time I wondered how people were able to take selfies.  Mystery solved but I still think that most selfies are silly.

We saw Bernie, the Adventureland mascot, a few times throughout the day and finally captured a photo. 

At the end of the month, BJ and I headed to Kansas City for the Chiefs-Patriots game.  I was able to see some old friends from work during the day and meet Catherine and Nick's beautiful and sweet daughter Claire before the game.  The company, weather and company were all great - a really fun and quick night away. 

My friend Betsy (in the unfortunate Patriots attaire) was a lot of talk before the game . She was pretty quiet the rest of the night :).  As always, it was great to see Catherine, Nick and Gavin.

I proudly showed off my selfie-taking ability.  I don't think that anyone believed me that I just learned how to do this.  Anywho, see the gap between Nick and Gavin?  That is where BJ was supposed to be, but we couldn't find him and time was of the essence for the selfie  [I promise to never write the word "selfie" again on the blog, I've annoyed myself.]

August and Two

 In August, we spent a few hours at the State Fair where we made time for the important things - fresh cinnamon donuts and fresh chocolate ice cream.

 



We also made our way over to the barns to find the largest steer at the Fair and did the obligatory walk by the Butter Cow.  

As we were making our way to the car, Charlie heard the sounds of the midway in the distance and was very intrigued.  We quickly told him that we thought that you had to be 5 to ride any rides, which Charlie didn't question.  Yummy treats and successful avoidance of the Midway - a huge success!  On a random note, Lucy is wearing her beloved outfit in the photos above (and in about half of the photos that I took this summer).  The return on investment for the "Daddy's Little Sunshine" shirt and the  yellow biker shorts from Carter's was out of the roof.  She would look for the outfit every day when it came time to get dressed and, if she found it, good luck trying to convince her to wear anything else.  It's now tucked away in her keepsake box, much stained and much loved.

Then, this happened.

Lucy turned two and we celebrated with our entire family with a You Are My Sunshine-themed party.  It was a great day and we were so thankful that everyone made the trek to West Des Moines.

Charlie assisted in opening the presents, usually garnering more excitement than Lucy, who was ready for a nap.

I was a little excited to open pink glitter boots from Nana and Papa...

and we tried them on right away.

Lucy received many other thoughtful gifts, including a little doll that is the perfect size for her to carry and sleep with,

a pizza set to add to serve to her guests,

some great dress up clothes, a cute fall outfit and an awesome bookshelf that Grandpa Bill made and Grandma Kathy painted. (I'll have to upload a photo soon as it is the perfect finishing touch to the toy room).

I'm kicking myself that I didn't get a photo of Lucy with her godparents - I'll have to remember that for next time.

A week after Lucy's birthday, she had her two-year check-up and her petite status continues.  She weighed 22 lbs, which is 5% and supposedly measured 33 inches tall, but we question that measurement because she seems substantially shorter. 

Lucy is generally a very happy little girl, but she definitely found her voice in the last couple of months and uses it frequently and loudly.  She seems to repeat everything that she hears and is not afraid to boss Charlie around.  Most of the time she and Charlie are still best friends, but they do fight over toys or who gets to sit closer to me or other important matters like who has more Cheerios in their bowl.

While I can't wait to see what the future holds, I while continue to search for a pause button to keep Charlie and Lucy these ages for a little while longer.

July

July was full of many fun activities.  We celebrated the Fourth of July back in Cascade with cousins, starting with a parade, 

 

 

 

getting way too much candy, and 

waving at Grandpa Bill who drove his tractor in the parade.  God bless small town parades where the tractors outnumber the floats.

We had a little bit of time back at Nana and Papa's house before we went to check out the festivities in town.  Lucy was a little dazed after being woken up from her nap but a little sugar helped her rally.

Not to be outdone, Charlie wanted to show off his spiky hair and star t-shirt!

Somewhere in mid-July, Lucy started to do the "Charlie" smile where the eyes are squeezed shut and the grin is big and open.  Just when he started to take some normal pictures, she decides that this is her favorite pose.  It's awesome.

We (the kids, not BJ or I) had fun running around in a shorts/diapers only attire. 

We headed to Kansas City for a weekend -we have great memories there so it is always nice to get back and visit.  This was a very kid-friendly trip with a stay at Crown Center, a visit to LegoLand, swimming and lots of snacks.

 We were so happy to get to see our friends Gavin, Nick, Catherine and Nick and Catherine's little girl Bryn.  It had been too long and despite Lucy's forlorn look in the picture, we had a great time. We showed up at their house hungry and tired so we weren't the best versions of ourselves, but it was great to see them and Bryn was incredibly sweet.  And we can't wait to see them in September and meet their new daughter Claire.

Following our KC trip, Charlie was rewarded for some good behavior and got to go see a movie.  He didn't eat his lunch that afternoon so I told him no popcorn.  An hour later, BJ texted me the picture below.  Such an enabler.

We had another fun sleepover with cousins.

And another sleepover with my friend Katie and her family.  So good to see them - it had been way too long and Katie's family is a mini version of her family growing up - too funny!

July - you came, we saw and conquered.  It was a great month!
