Blood, Sweat, Tears & Pretzel Salt

Charlie's blood, my sweat and tears from both us...although a lot more from me than him.  It was quite a morning.

Charlie was peacefully sleeping so I decided that it was an ideal time to trim his nails.  As I went to cut the last nail, his cute little thumb nonetheless, he jumped and I accidently cut a little of his skin.  Immediately his lower lip popped out and he started to cry.  I began to cry and then sweat when I saw his finger start to bleed.  I lost all sense of logic and immediately began to think that I should call our pediatrician or at the very least call BJ and tell him to come home from work.  Although the thumb only bled for a minute or so, and Charlie cried for less than a minute, I was a wreck.  To me, the two blood-stained cotton balls looked like something out of "Saving Private Ryan."  When BJ came home for lunch an hour after the "incident", Charlie was smilng and kicking his legs and I looked like I had just left a family member's funeral.  I did not take a picture of the mommy-induced injury as I do not want to assist Child Protective Services with gathering any evidence.

Despite the traumatic morning, by late afternoon I hit my stride.  I decided to bake a few chicken breasts - some of which we were going to have for dinner last night and others to freeze for a later meal.  Before leaving Charlie with BJ to go to Target, I placed said perfectly baked chicken breasts on top of the oven to cool and off I went.  I even put on mascara for my big Target outing.  Well, I was just walking into Target when BJ called to say that all was well at home, but while BJ was in our bedroom with Charlie, Ginger managed to eat all of the chicken breasts.  I should have been mad, but all I could think was "well shoot, I bet she didn't even let Copper have a little bite."

Knowing that dinner was now digesting in Ginger's stomach, I decided to swing through Target's little cafe and pick up a giant pretzel that was dripping with butter and sprinkled in salt.  Not the most nutritious option, but I had a rough morning (see previous paragraph about injuring my child).  I carefully ate the pretzel using the wax paper wrapper that was provided and multiple napkins so as to avoid touching the pretzel with my hands (there was just no way that I could use Purell between every bite and steering the cart, so this was the safest option).  I was pretty impressed with myself when I noticed that I kept getting these smiling/pity looks from other customers.  I assumed that they saw the box of size 1 Pampers in my cart and were giving me the "oh, you just had a baby and you're here at Target, bless you" look that I used to give people.  It was only after loading my purchases in the car and checking my reflection in my rearview mirror that I noticed that I had a streak of butter on my chin and at least 3 visible pieces of pretzel salt stuck to my lip.

Sadly, this is just the latest anecdote about me going out in public with food on my face.  I've been known to show up at work with a huge blob of peanut butter on my cheek or take the dogs for a walk with melted chocolate on my chin.  Apparently I mirror the eating habits of a toddler.  Needless to say, the butter/pretzel salt stained-face took all attention away from the fact that I was wearing mascara.  I'm such a rookie.

  1. You are my hero, Carey....such great stories. I wish I would have written down all the bone-headed things I've done when the kiddos were all infants, it would be nice to laugh about one day...if I could only remember them.

Does Charlie like to be swaddled? That is how I've gotten all of my kids to sleep in their cribs.
